Constance McMillen won her day in court, but she did not win her prom
back.
A federal judge ruled Tuesday that the Mississippi high school student’s
rights were violated when her school decided to ban her and her girlfriend from
the annual high school dance, which was later canceled. The judge did not force
the school to hold the event, The Advocate reported.
Itawamba Agricultural High School officials canceled prom after McMillen
announced the American Civil Liberties Union planned to help her fight the
school. The school said her presence would cause a distraction. The other students blamed McMillan
for the cancellation of her prom.
A private prom event planned by some parents is set for next month. McMillen
is not invited.
While she may not be going to prom, she is certainly making a splash. She’s
been featured on several national networks including ABC, CBS and CNN. Ellen
DeGeneres gave McMillen a $30,000 scholarship for college.
