Cynthia Nixon criticised for saying her sexuality is a choice
by Peter Lloyd

American actress Cynthia Nixon has come under fierce criticism from members of the LGBT community after claiming that her sexuality is a choice.

The 45 year-old performer - famous for playing Miranda Hobbes in the smash-hit Sex and the City franchise - made the comment during a speech for gay empowerment.
Nixon, who is engaged to her long-term partner Christine Marinoni, told the New York Times: "I gave a speech recently, an empowerment speech to a gay audience, and it included the line 'I've been straight and I've been gay, and gay is better.'

The Iron Lady nominated for two Academy Awards
by Peter Lloyd

The Iron Lady, directed by prominent gay director Phyllida Lloyd, has been nominated for two categories in the 84th Academy Awards.
Starring Meryl Streep, who plays former prime minister Margaret Thatcher, the film has been shortlisted for best actress in a leading role whilst Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland have been nominated for the best makeup category.
"And they tried to get me to change it, because they said it implies that homosexuality can be a choice. And for me, it is a choice. I understand that for many people it's not, but for me it's a choice, and you don't get to define my gayness for me.

"A certain section of our community is very concerned that it not be seen as a choice, because if it's a choice, then we could opt out.
"I say it doesn't matter if we flew here or we swam here, it matters that we are here and we are one group and let us stop trying to make a litmus test for who is considered gay and who is not."

Nixon was living with her male partner of fifteen years, Danny Mozes, when she first met education activist Marinoni, to whom she's now engaged.
Adding fuel to the fire, Nixon also claimed that gay people who denounce her view are bigots.

"Why can't it be a choice? Why is that any less legitimate? It seems we're just ceding this point to bigots who are demanding it, and I don't think that they should define the terms of the debate. I also feel like people think I was walking around in a cloud and didn't realize I was gay, which I find really offensive.

"I find it offensive to me, but I also find it offensive to all the men I've been out with."
According to the Daily Mail, gay blogger John Aravosis is one of several people irked by her claims.
He said: "It's not a choice. Every religious right hatemonger is now going to quote this woman every single time they want to deny us our civil rights."

Aisha Tyler talks kissing a girl
by Trish Bendix

On The Talk, Aisha Tyler said the only time she's drank alcohol while working was when she was going to be kissing another woman on screen and the other woman was nervous and suggested they have some screwdrivers. The only movie I know that Aisha kissed another woman in was .45, and she got a little steamy with Milla Jovovich. By process of elimination, I think it's her! Now you all know that Milla likes screwdrivers.

'Ab Fab's' Patsy and Edina Star in New Alexis Bittar Campaign
By: Michael Matson

Yeah, Babe!
New York jewelry designer Alexis Bittar booked Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley to star in his latest advertising campaign as their Absolutely Fabulous alter egos, Edina Monson and Patsy Stone.
I'm a massive fan! Bittar tells British Vogue. From the first episode I inherited the word 'sweetie' for five years. It got to the point where it was nauseating and I was forced to stop.

The admiration is mutual.
Such a fabulous shoot in the glorious jewelry from Alexis, said Lumley.  It was sensational and I am thrilled with the pieces I have from his generous talented hands. Patsy was transfixed by the quality and wants lots more forever. I hope the campaign rocks: I am a fan for life.

La Roux is going to be on the next Absolutely Fabulous God I love her!

Upstairs Downstairs to return with lesbian romance
by PinkNews.co.uk

BBC period drama Upstairs Downstairs will feature a lesbian plot line when it returns this spring, one of the show's writers has revealed.
Emilia Fox will play Lady Portia Alresford, a former lover of Blanche Mottershead, portrayed by Alex Kingston, best known for her role as ER's Elizabeth Corday.
The first series of the Upstairs Downstairs revival was closely watched as the BBC's answer to ITV's seemingly unstoppable Downton Abbey.
The latter briefly tackled gay relationships in high society with a dalliance between the Duke of Crowborough and a footman of the Crawley family in its first series.
While that relationship was kept quiet, the lesbian affair in the inter-war drama Upstairs Downstairs is made public.
Writer Heidi Thomas told the Mirror: These are two brilllant, intellectual women who have a deeply romantic friendship in the tradition of the great Edwardian romantics, which gives each of them endless stimulation and satisfaction.

The covert and difficult relationships, she added, causes a bit of a stir when it all comes out, but Blanche finds support and sympathy from an unlikely quarter.
She is quite a radical, very used to a free existence, and doesn't understand why she would have to conform to the beautifully-kept world they've created for themselves.
The series is due for broadcast in the spring.

Shirley MacLaine to Play Lady Grantham's Mother on 'Downton Abbey'
By: Tracy E. Gilchrist

Just when it looked as though the Emmy and Golden Globe winning Downton Abbey couldn't get any juicier Shirley MacLaine has been cast as Lady Grantham's (Elizabeth McGovern) American mother, according to The Daily Beast.

Masterpiece Classics Upstairs / Downstairs meets Revenge with its well-placed but deliciously soapy leanings has become a pop culture juggernaut that's not only wildly popular but critically lauded. The story, about the intersection of the upper and lower classes in a grand English household circa World War I, features several strong female characters and with a proto-feminist bent.

'Bad Girls' Pilot Gets Picked Up By NBC for American Remake
By: SheWired

Fans of the British women in prison series Bad Girls, which ran from 1999 to 2006, will either jump for joy or balk at the news that NBC has been tapped to produce the pilot for an American version of the series, according to Deadline.

Prior to NBC's getting the gig HBO was on board for an American remake, which could have mirrored some of the grit of that network's prison show Oz.

Now, ER, Third Watch and Southland executive producer John Wells has taken on the task of producing an American Bad Girls pilot.
The project, based on the long-running UK hit series of the same name, follows the ins-and-outs of a group of unlikely women in a federal prison: a scandalous female warden, her new protégé and a host of inmates some mothers, some friends who struggle with loyalties to people on the inside and the outside, according to Deadline.

While an incredibly well rounded series in general, the British series especially resonated for lesbian viewers with its honest and thoughtful depiction of the lesbian couple Nikki (Mandana Jones) and Helen (Simone Lahbib) long before there was a slight proliferation of lesbian characters on television.

Here's hoping NBC gets it right, although HBO was likely the better bet if grit matters.
